Redefining — sound installation at Malta Biennale

“Redefining. Polish-Ghanaian Textile Narratives” · curated by Natalia Bradbury
Golden Falcon Best Pavilion · Malta Biennale 2026

Presented as part of “Redefining. Polish-Ghanaian Textile Narratives”, the sound installation formed an integral sonic layer within the Polish Pavilion at Malta Biennale 2026. The exhibition brought together large-scale textile works by Marta Nadolle and Eliza Proszczuk (Poland) and Ernestina Mansa Doku (Ghana), exploring cultural exchange, material memory, and collective identity.

The sound composition by Mariusz Szypura unfolded as a fluid spatial structure — subtle, textural, continuously evolving — responding to the physicality and rhythm of the fabrics. A meditative yet dynamic field rooted in the Ubuntu philosophy: “I am because we are.”

At Fab Factory Studios, a special pre-release presentation of Chopin Residue took place on January 31, 2026 — presenting the album ahead of its official digital release in its complete Dolby Atmos 11.1.6 format, on Fab Factory's Atmos stage in Studio A.

The immersive Atmos mix was engineered by Jacek Gawłowski, with production led jointly by Gawłowski and Szypura — designed specifically to showcase the spatial depth and dynamic detail of the work in a multi-speaker environment.

Chopin Residue — 9-channel sound field, Osaka

Audiovisual installation · large-scale projection · lathe-cut thread canvas
9 ch independent sound field Lathe-cut thread canvases Dynamic light × video

At BALC Gallery, the installation was presented in its full audiovisual form. At the centre of the composition: a nine-channel sound field, in which each source operated independently, creating a complex spatial mosaic of textures.

The experience was complemented by large-scale video projections, produced using dynamic lighting and footage captured on pre-prepared canvases made of thread — material generated as waste during the lathe-cut vinyl record process.

Chopin Residue by Mariusz Szypura is a multidisciplinary exhibition that reinterprets the legacy of Fryderyk Chopin through contemporary sound and visual art. Shown at Fridman Gallery, the exhibition includes visual works paired with original music inspired by Chopin's heritage — each piece created especially for this project by different artists.

As part of the opening, selected pieces were performed live by Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), John Stanier (Helmet, Battles, Tomahawk), and Zoh Amba — a unique site-specific interpretation.

Chopin Residue Nonaptych — Prelude Op. 28 No. 20, presented at the Museum of King Jan III's Palace in Wilanów. Multimedia fusion of visual art, sound and light. At its centre is a large, monochrome artwork made from thread — a byproduct of manually cutting nine vinyl records, played back during the installation on 9 separate turntables inside the historic Baroque interiors of the north gallery.

Dynamic lighting synchronised with the music casts shifting shadows, evoking movement within the artwork's structure. The presentation marked the opening of the TOP CHARITY Auction 2025 Grand Gala.

Lathe-Cut Session — vinyl cut live

A performance of subtraction · 81 records → thread → artwork
81 records 9 per track 9 tracks 9 artworks

The process of cutting records — later transformed into threads and materials for the artworks — was performed live at Bunkier Sztuki in Kraków. The artist isolated themselves within the gallery space, working with a vinyl cutting machine to cut records in real time. The entire process was open to the audience and recorded on video.

The thread produced as waste from the lathe-cut vinyl process is the negative of the vinyl groove. If the record contains the sound, the thread embodies the unsound — the residual trace left behind in the act of recording.

The êkhos (ἦχος) exhibition at Lincoln Center in New York, presented as part of Unsound Festival NYC 2024, is a stereoscopic anaglyph audio-video installation that embodies noise — understood as ekhos in ancient Greek — in a graphic performance organically reacting to sound.

The visual and audio experience switching in terms of senses leads to a kind of artistic confusion. The more we immerse ourselves in the project, the more we start to see the music and hear the visuals.

Method01

Sound as material

We treat sound the way an architect treats stone — as a material that occupies space, defines edges, and inscribes a memory in the room. Every production is dimensioned in channels, not just minutes. Time is the secondary axis; space is the first.

Method02

Image as resonance

The image is not illustration. It is what the room remembers after the sound has left. We work with stereoscopic anaglyph, large-scale projection, thread sculpture, lathe-cut vinyl — media where physical waste becomes the visual record.

Method03

Foundation as host

SAVAF is the producer, never the author. We commission, finance, and structure the artistic labour of others — including the body of work by Mariusz Szypura — and place it inside institutions willing to host it. We do not exhibit; we produce.

We do not exhibit. We produce. — Working method · SAVAF
